Seniors Housing Survey Campaign

The discontinued Seniors Housing Survey provided valuable information on vacancy rates, rental costs, counts, new developments and more, necessary to respond to and make decisions that address the unique housing needs of seniors, including evidence-based policymaking. Many organizations relied on the survey for the information including CSLA, financial, university and research institutions, developers, and provincial policymakers.

As Canada’s senior population rapidly grows, tools such as the Seniors Housing Survey will be invaluable to address our future needs.

FAQs

What is the Seniors Housing Survey? C’est quoi l’Enquête sur les résidences pour personnes âgées?

The Seniors Housing Survey conducted by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) was a census covering all centers in each of the 10 provinces and includes both private and non-profit seniors residences.

What data did the survey collect? Quelles données l’enquête a-t-elle recueillies?

The survey provided critical data on senior housing needs and trends including vacancy rates, rents, universe counts, and services and amenities. Here is an example of survey insights from 2021, providing essential insights into the supply, demand, and affordability of senior housing.

Why did CMHC discontinue their data collection? Pourquoi la SCHL a-t-elle cessé de recueillir des données?

CMHC reviewed their surveys and publications, deciding to discontinue data collection for rents, vacancies and services for the Seniors’ Housing Survey in 2021, leaving significant data gaps. This decision was part of a broader initiative to review their entire housing surveys program and alignment to their work on affordability.

After 4 years, still no other survey has been established.
